Mr

Principal’s Message

Dear Northside Christian College community,

At Northside, we place great value on building our sense of community. Our Strategic Plan: A Place to Flourish highlights “Strengthening School Community Connections” as a strategic priority for the College. I pray our students will embrace the many extracurricular activities available this term to support them to feel connected at Northside. Music, sports, debating, art, chapel, and other activities provide authentic opportunities for us to connect.

I am praying we have a wonderful term ahead as a College community.

Working together,

As a College community, we have had several formal opportunities during Term 4 to celebrate everything achieved during the 2024 school year. We give thanks to God for all that He has provided for our College community and for the many ways we have been blessed. Congratulations once again to each student at Northside on completing another year of learning. I extend a special congratulations to the Year 12 class of 2024 on completing their formal schooling. We continue to pray for this cohort of students as they prepare for a broad range of post-school pathways.

“I wish to thank each of the teachers at Northside for their efforts throughout the school year. Our teaching staff worked hard - aiming to achieve outstanding outcomes for each student at Northside Christian College. I am also grateful for the support and dedication of the learning support and technical staff, INSPiRE, library, administration, wellbeing, enrolment and marketing, I.T, finance, and property staff for their valuable contribution to support our College community. We are blessed to have a dedicated team at Northside supporting our students to flourish.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

WEEK 6B: BOOK WEEK

I have valued the opportunity to be part of the College community during the past eight years working closely with a dedicated team of staff and a supportive Committee of Management. It is special serving in a school community with Christ at the centre of all we do. I have loved seeing the many ways God has blessed us as a College community during this time. We continue to give God all the glory.

Primary School Year 2 Scienceworks Excursion

In Week 6, the Year 2 students had an exciting excursion to Scienceworks and the Planetarium to deepen their understanding of space science, building on this term’s Inquiry learning. Highlights of the day included the Sportsworks exhibit, here students explored the amazing capabilities of the human body, and the Planetarium, where they joined Tycho on an engaging journey to Mars. They also marveled at the stars and planets visible from Earth in the night sky. A special thank you to Mr Harri, Mrs Creek, and Mrs Butler for supporting us on this memorable adventure!

Prep Fire Education

Fire fighters from Bundoora Fire Brigade came to visit the Prep classes during Term 4. They taught the Preps about:

● having a safe meeting spot outside the family home (the letterbox is recommended),

● always having an adult around a fire, like a barbeque, fireplace, birthday candles,

● what to do in the event of a fire (Stop Drop Roll; Crawl Down Low and Go Go Go), and

● the importance of smoke alarms in the house.

They even gave the Preps homework and showed them their fire truck!

Year 3 Camp

On 14th - 16th October, the Year 3 students went to Burnside Camp in Anglesea. We had the best weather and exciting things to do! Students enjoyed archery, rock climbing, low ropes course as well as bush cooking with damper and marshmallows. We walked to the beach and had a sand castle competition. One of the groups called ‘Wombats’ created a whale out of sand, it looked amazing! We also had delicious lunches and dinners and watched a wonderful movie. We had lots of fun!

Year 4 Endangered Animal Incursion

In October, our Year 4 classes had an incredible time with the Wild Action incursion, participating in an interactive workshop focused on Australia’s endangered species. Students engaged with a variety of threatened animals, learning about the unique roles they play in our ecosystem and the challenges they face in the wild.

The hands-on experience of getting up close with these amazing creatures sparked curiosity and fostered a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation. A big thank you to Wild Action for making this enriching experience possible!

Year 5 Old Melbourne Gaol Excursion

On Tuesday 15th August, all the Year 5 students went on an excursion to the Old Melbourne Gaol, and it was epic. Everyone had been looking forward to this, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

We started the day early, and everyone buzzed with excitement as we boarded the bus. The ride was filled with laughter and chatter, and everyone tried to imagine what Ned Kelly’s cell would be like. The bus stopped us at Flinders Square, where we had our recess and split into groups to go around the city, finding a gem. We were able to stop at 7-11, use a tram, and venture around the city.

When we finished our race to find gems, we walked to the Old Melbourne Gaol. At the Old Melbourne Gaol, we had a guide to lead us through campus and explain how it worked in the 1800s and 1900s. The Gaol stood there, towering grey. It made you feel like you were stepping back into the 1900s as a prisoner!

After our adventure on the campus, we toured the cells. I can’t imagine living in a small cold cell with only a thin straw bed and a bucket for years. The most terrifying part was seeing the gallow that was used to hang Ned Kelly and other prisoners. Being in his cell made me feel aghast. When our tour came to an end, we were able to buy some things from the gift shop.

We walked to the Royal Exhibition Building, where we had our lunch and got to have fun playing downball. When we finished our lunch, we boarded the bus to go home. On the way back to the College, we were all exhausted but everyone chatted about the amazing day we had. We all wished the day could be repeated.

Year 9 Mock Interviews

This term, Year 9 students participated in mock interviews as part of their Work Studies program at the Plenty Ranges Arts & Convention Centre. Organised by the BNLLEN, this event was a key component of the Real Industry Job Interviews (RIJI) program. Students had the opportunity to craft resumes and cover letters tailored for casual jobs they aim to apply for in the near future. With the support of dedicated volunteers, each student engaged in a professional interview experience, receiving valuable feedback that enhanced their confidence and skills.

Year 7 Camp Howqua

We are like the Sand, looked over by the painted sky. We are like the sand, looked over by the painted sky, Individuals among other grains, countless thoughts by God up high,

Powerful waves falling to rise, He calms the seas, they willingly abide, Thoughts in our heads; a vigorous tide

Linked with each other; a Christian community, Bonded together for all eternity, The sky; a blank canvas, Our creator; the renowned artist,

Hot sand between our toes, Uplifting comfort during the lows The long, milky horizon; sun kissed A huge ball of fiery orange; amidst,

We are like the painted sky, looking down on the sand, God: the sturdy rocks beside us, firmly holding our hand.

Year 7 InstaPoetry with Julian

Year 7 students were invited into writing ‘InstaPoetry’ with Julian, a passionate poet who thoroughly enjoyed visiting our College and facilitating the poetry writing process. Julian was amazed at the creativity and passion of our Year 7 students and asked if he could get copies of their work.

Parents of the Year 7 students should be proud of their child and their ability to be creative. With a few small writing techniques, everyone shone.

As Year 7 teachers, we were also super encouraged by their creativity and teamwork.

Senior School Year 10 Science: Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC)

On 31st October, the Year 10 students visited the Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) at Strathmore Secondary College to learn more about the universe, the life cycle of stars, and the technologies used in space exploration. Students were given the opportunity to use computer programs such as “Atlas of the Universe” to locate themselves in the Milky Way Galaxy and explore billions of other stars both near and far. The “Tickle My Droid” session was a particular highlight for many as students learnt how to code for and control a Sphero SPRK+ robot to explore a miniature version of Mars. It was a day filled with hands-on experiences, fascinating lectures, and unique learning experiences for all who attended.

Marissa Chui

Year 10 Writing Workshop with Joel McKerrow

On Friday 18th October, the Year 10 students met Joel McKerrow, poet and author. Joel was exuberant in his delivery of creative writing techniques, drawing out of the Year 10 students some incredible writing.

Students who loved writing, flourished and enjoyed the creative writing process. Other students were confronted by Joel’s excitement for writing, but after an hour they were writing creatively and showing that they too had incredible imaginative things to share.

It was a fantastic workshop where we personally learned as teachers. Our hope is that all our Year 10 students were able to see that writing something interesting is accessible to everyone.

Mr Phil Waters and Mrs Sharon Simic

Year 11 Biology

In October, our Year 11 students took a trip to the Healesville Sanctuary to study how animals adapt to their environment to survive, and how these adaptive features assist them daily. We saw koalas actively moving, observed and discussed their structural, physiological and behavioural adaptations. Students completed an ethogram through observing the behaviours of the platypus every 20 seconds over a 5 minute period. Scratching was the most observed behaviour during this time. Data was then be used and discussed in class to deepen our understanding of our native species.

Students were fortunate to feed an emu and to hear about the reproductive cycles of koalas, kangaroos and platypuses and to touch a real preserved echidna skin. Those hair spikes are very sharp. It was wonderful to put our theoretical knowledge into real life contexts and to ask important questions to experts in their field.

Year 12 Final Day celebrations

On Tuesday 22nd October, our community farewelled the graduating class of 2024 on their final day of school! The Year 12 students worked hard to decorate the school as a Medieval realm, and ran themed activities for each of the Primary school classes. We were even able to dig up the old Prep video from 2012 to show at our special Assembly -featuring many of our graduates (only much, much smaller!). It was a blessing to join in their fun and celebrate in a uniquely Northside way - sending the students off through the whole school archway, a tradition spanning decades! It is wonderful to see our Year 12 students celebrate the end of a season before undertaking their final exams, and we will continue to pray for them as they revise and strive for success in all they do.

Valedictory Dinner

On Friday 22nd November, Northside Christian College held its Valedictory Dinner to honour the graduating class of 2024. The evening was a celebration attended by students, families, and staff, all gathering to reflect on the memorable journey of the graduates. Throughout the night, we heard from students, a parent, and teachers as they shared their experiences at and reflections of Northside. It was a wonderful night of community and fellowship, and we thank God for the opportunity to say farewell to our Year 12 students as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

Sport

Prep - Year 2 Swimming Carnival

In November, the Prep - Year 2 Swimming Carnival at Splash in Craigieburn was an amazing event. Students showcased their swimming skills while enjoying a fun-filled day. The event featured races, relay activities, a water playground, water aerobics, and pool games. A huge thank you to the Secondary school students who contributed to making the day a success. Congratulations to the Noble Knights for their victory!

Years 9/10 CSEN Soccer Rally Day Success

In October, nine of our Years 9 - 10 students represented the College at the CSEN Soccer Rally Day, competing against 16 other teams at the Knox Regional Football Centre. Our team displayed outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork, and support—not only for each other, but also for their opponents. Their efforts paid off with an impressive 3rd place finish! Congratulations to the team for their hard work, camaraderie, and for making our College proud!

Netball Rally Day

On 21st October 2024, a group of ten students from Years 7 - 8 competed in the Mixed Netball Rally Day. We participated in a total of six tough games and overall won four out of our six games. Our team’s chemistry and victories allowed us to be able to place in a playoff for third place, which we ended up winning 10-8 respectively. The group did an amazing job enduring through the humidity and more-experienced players; but in the end, the students came out victorious, placing third overall out of the six total teams.

Cricket Gala Day

On Wednesday 9th October, a team of our Years 5/6 students participated in the District Cricket Gala Day at Parade College, representing our College with great enthusiasm and skill. We are proud to announce that Northside finished in second place after a series of competitive matches!

A special congratulations to our MVPs, Pitchy and Kevin, who showcased incredible cricket skills throughout the day, leading the team with their outstanding performances. I would also like to give a special mention to Yuvi, who impressed with his strong play, and Michael, who has shown fantastic improvement in the sport.

CSEN Championship

Girls Volleyball

On Monday 14th October, the Years 9/10 Intermediate Girls Volleyball team spent a day at the Dandenong State Volleyball Centre, competing for the CSEN Volleyball Championship. Out of seven games, our team managed to win four. Placing fourth overall out of ten other teams, we gained many skills in sport as well as teamwork and fairness. As a team, we are very grateful for this opportunity to play and grow with our friends.

CSEN Championship Boys

Volleyball

On Monday 14th October, the Years 9/10 boys competed in the CSEN Volleyball Championships. All the boys played their best, unfortunately falling short, placing 5th out of 12 teams overall. Well done to all the boys for their performance and their excellent sets, digs and spikes!

Daniel, Year 10 students

Years 9/10 Engineering

Years 9/10 Engineering students participated in an excursion to the Whittlesea Tech School, focusing on the practical application of classroom learning. During the visit, students constructed gliders using laser-cut materials. This activity enabled them to apply principles of aerodynamics, assess material properties, and engage in problem-solving to enhance flight performance.

Students also progressed with their launcher projects by utilising CAD software for design development. This process reinforced their computer-aided drafting skills, which are critical in engineering. Additionally, students incorporated Canva to design decals for their gliders, integrating design and presentation elements into their projects.

The excursion provided valuable hands-on experience, linking theoretical knowledge with practical execution. We thank Whittlesea Tech School for facilitating this learning opportunity and the staff for their support in making this experience productive.

Write a Book in a Day 2024

In September, students from Primary School and Middle School participated in the “12 Hour Write a Book in a Day” competition. The event challenged students to use their creativity and produce a book within 12 hours. They also raised $6,738 for kids’ cancer research. I was thoroughly impressed with the students’ skills and dedication. The room was noisy as they brainstormed and gave each other feedback. After making final edits, they created not only stories, but also a sense of community and service.

Years 7/8 Mooting

On Tuesday 29th October, a team of Years 7/8 students went to Ivanhoe Grammar School to observe several Moots. Mooting is where student teams present a case on a set legal problem, against an opposing team.

It was a valuable learning experience where students received an online lecture in a lecture theatre, from an accomplished lawyer called Patrick, who is highly experienced in law, and even went to the High Court of Australia! Patrick gave us general steps we can follow to pursue an interest in law, his personal story/inspiration and the importance of improving our reading, thinking, writing and editing skills and networking.

Afterwards students went to observe several Moots. This was a great way to simulate a court experience, take notes and gain understanding of what mooting is. We also got to practise critical thinking by listening to feedback from university judges studying law, and observing presentations in a mock court proceeding. Overall, it was super fun and an incredible opportunity to learn and ask questions. A huge thank you to Mrs Simic and Mrs Field for their support!

SHINE and STRENGTH

During Term 3, the SHINE and STRENGTH workshops were delivered to our Year 8 students as part of their Pastoral Care curriculum. These personal development programs were designed to equip students with essential skills for greater self-awareness and personal growth.

The program consisted of three core units:

1.Worth/Significance – focusing on building self-esteem.

2.Strength/Resilience – aimed at increasing emotional intelligence.

3.Purpose/Courage – encouraging students to dream and set future goals.

Throughout the sessions, both boys and girls participated in fun and challenging activities, exploring important topics like identity, self-worth, respect, choices, relationships, resilience, and purpose. In small, interactive groups, students had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and activities in a supportive, informal environment. The relaxed atmosphere, complete with snacks and moments of laughter, helped students deepen their friendships and build trust with one another. This approach fostered a sense of community while promoting personal development in a fun and engaging way.

LOVE vs FEAR Love never fails fear of rejection

You’ve probably read 1 Corinthians 13, or alternatively heard it at some point. A Bride and Groom standing at the altar about to do their “I Do’s.” Let me refresh your memory:

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails.

In a recent PD, based around Loving our Students on Purpose (LoSoP)1, we discussed what love is, but also what love isn’t. We looked at the table below:

LOVE IS:

LOVE ISN’T:

Patient Impatient

Kind Unkind

Humble Envy, boasts, proud

Honour Dishonour

Serves others Self-seeking

Remains calm Easily Angered

Forgives and let’s go Keeps record of wrongs

Rejoices in the truth Delights in evil/lies

Protects Harms

Trusts Mistrusts

Hopes Hopelessness

Perseveres Gives Up ALWAYS WINS! ALWAYS FAILS!

When reading the “Love isn’t” category, I came to a realisation that the root cause behind most of these was fear.

Impatient – “If I don’t act now, I fear I’ll miss out (FOMO)2

Keeps record of wrongs – “I’m afraid to let you off the hook because you might do it again.”

Harms – “I’m afraid you will harm me, so I will cause you harm first.

Gives up – “I’m afraid to fail, so I won’t even try.”

Continued on next page >>

And Fear instead of LOVE in relationships, causes us not to allow the other person full access to our heart out of fear of rejection.

In a recent mentoring session, I was asked, “What are you afraid of?” Perhaps out of pride or learned beliefs (real men are never afraid, never show emotion, Christians should nott fear anything), I found it extremely difficult to admit that I have fear at all, however, I was able to name a few eventually. He then reminded me the way I handle my fears, particularly my fear of rejection, affects how well I love my wife, love and discipline my children, handle conflicts and deal with the behaviours of others. So fear can bring about the opposite spirit to love.

For most people, ‘hate’ would be considered the opposite of love, but based on the above I would like to suggest that ‘fear’ is an equally sufficient antonym. 1 John 4:18a says, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” Where there is an absence of love, there is fear. So a couple of questions to you: What are you afraid of?

Music Individual Singing Students Excel

Did you know that nearly a quarter of Northside students are now receiving tutoring in various musical instruments? Vocal coach Mrs Michelle Hodgson is incredibly proud of her vocal students and has been thrilled to see them using their God-given talents to serve their church communities.

In Secondary School, Year 7 student Tobiloba has joined her church worship team as a backup singer for the main service and is also leading worship for the youth service. Her sister, Tomison, plays keys in the worship team. Year 9 student Jaimee has become part of her church choir and has been invited to sing solo parts.

In Primary School, Year 5 student Teresa has taken on a leadership role in her church’s music program, while Year 3 student Nikan was chosen to perform a special song at his church’s Carols Service.

What a blessing these talented music students are to their church communities!

Procedures for the Bushfire Season

Northside Christian College has developed and regularly reviews the College’s Bushfire Preparedness Policy (Policy No. 18). Bushfire preparedness is not just a concern for schools listed on the Bushfire At−Risk Register. Student transport to and from school, participation in offsite activities (including camps, excursions and sporting activities) and the risk of localised fire events demonstrate the importance of bushfire preparedness for all schools.

The College’s Bushfire Preparedness Policy documents procedures designed to ensure that preventative strategies are implemented and to ensure that students and staff are prepared to respond in the event of a bushfire. This response may include pre-emptive planned closures of the College, evacuation or what to do in the event that evacuation is unsafe. The preparation of this plan has been developed in accordance with the Northside Christian College Emergency Management and Critical Incident Plan.

We wish to advise that the College may cancel camps or excursions, or may even be required to close the school when Emergency Services declare a Code Red (Catastrophic) fire danger day, or when the risk of bush fire is heightened. Parents will be advised (by SMS and other means) if the College is to close, or if camps or excursions are to be cancelled, with as much forward notice as may be possible

It is important that all families, particularly those in bush fire prone or high risk areas, have a family fire safety plan. The plan should include information about alternative care arrangements for children in the event that the College is required to close. Families are encouraged to practise the plan and be familiar with procedures to be followed in the case of a bush fire or house fire.

Northside Christian College is not listed on the Department of Education’s Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR).

Parents and carers of Victorian school-aged children will receive the one-off

Find out more School Saving Bonus

Wednesday 28 August 2024

Dear parents and carers

Re: $400 School Saving Bonus

Families want the absolute best for their kids. But with the current cost of living – uniforms, camps, sports and more – it all adds up.

That’s why the Allan Labor Government is making life that little bit easier for families, by providing a one-off $400 School Saving Bonus.

Non-government school students who will be in Prep through to Year 12 in 2025, and who are receiving the means-tested Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF), are eligible for the School Saving Bonus.

Parents and carers do not need to apply, with the School Saving Bonus being paid to nongovernment schools for eligible students from late November 2024.

The $400 School Saving Bonus is available for each child. That means an eligible family with three school-aged children will receive a total of $1,200.

Importantly, the School Saving Bonus is available in addition to the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund.

To learn more about the School Saving Bonus, talk to your school about how this cost of living relief will apply to you.

More information about the School Saving Bonus is also available at vic.gov.au/schoolsaving-bonus.

And from our families to yours – best of luck for the 2025 school year.

Sincerely,
